“ | The future's already here, friend. Nothing I can do about it, nothing to stop it. As much as I would, as much as I want to, I can't turn it back. | „ |
Mason, The Great War Veteran, is a Campfire Companion for the Traveler.
Mason frequently asks for sad stories and is first encounterable outside of Washington, DC. His story is written by Sydney Meeker, and he is voiced by Jacob Burgess.
Background[ | ]
Mason is a World War I veteran. He and his brother Paul fought on the front lines overseas together until Paul was killed in action. Mason lost his right leg, likely due to tetanus as he says it came from a scrape on rusty barbed wire. His sister Jessie blames him for the death of their brother and refuses to let Mason come home, hence why he wanders the country. His father passed away sometime after the war and his mother developed dementia. When the player meets him, he is making his way to Oregon to go home.
Mason mentions being a part of the Bonus Army; the Bonus Army Conflict wasn't an actually army, but a group of demonstrators made up of World War I veterans and their families who marched on Washington D.C. to demand early payout of their service bonus certificates.
Interactions with the Player[ | ]
Mason can originally be found outside of Washington, DC, and travels around in the Northeast. He mainly asks for sad stories from the Traveler. Upon reaching Chapter 3 with him, he gives you a shell casing from a bullet, worn by handling, that teleports you back to DC.
True Form[ | ]
Mason's true form is him in agony, being torn apart by his military and civilian self. His right military half has his leg intact and is slightly translucent. On the military side there is a rifle, which is mirrored by his crutch on the civilian side.
