The Loan Shark[ | ]
The first character you properly meet in the game. You play him in a hand of poker where he encourages you to wager a favor. When he tricks you into losing, the game begins. You are to wander the country, collecting stories. He teaches you how to tell stories by letting you pick several dream stories to tell him. These dream stories are not part of the full game and vanish after they're told.

When you die, you are brought back to a campfire-like interrogation with the Grey Wolf. During this time, you can tell him up to five stories you've collected. Telling the Grey Wolf one of the stories you've collected counts as telling it to one of the mortal characters, which allows it to begin circulating and evolving back in the real world.

The Dire Wolf is eponymously named after the extinct species of wolf[1].
